Global Green starts biomass power projects
UK-based Global Green Power Plc. Corp. (GGP) said it had started the bidding process for key equipment and services necessary to build the company’s first three 15-megawatt (MW) biomass power plants in the Philippines - in the provinces of Panay, Nueva Ecija and Pangasinan.
Global Green, through its subsidiaries, plans to invest a total of 5.6 billion pesos (at about $40 million each project) for the three power plants.
These projects were the first to be endorsed by the department of energy <http://www.asianewsnet.net/searchresult.php?sec=2&keysh=energy > following the passage of the Renewable Energy bill in December 2008. Recently, these projects were classified by the Board of Investments (BOI) as ‘pioneer’ ventures.
“The BOI (registration) will afford the projects special fiscal and nonfiscal incentives,” Gordon Thomson, CFO of Global Green Power PLC Corp. said in a statement.
Grace Yeneza, compliance director of Global Green Power, said the first project to be implemented would be Green Power Panay Philippines Inc. The project broke ground in Panay last month and was attended by church dignitaries as well as government and industry leaders, Yeneza added.
Global Green chair Simon MacKinnon said the Philippine projects were in response to the calls made by the Department of Energy for additional power to be generated in Panay Island.
Power supply in the Visayas grid remains tight, energy <http://www.asianewsnet.net/searchresult.php?sec=2&keysh=energy > secretary Angelo T. Reyes earlier said.
Reyes appealed to the stakeholders in the energy <http://www.asianewsnet.net/searchresult.php?sec=2&keysh=energy > industry to move quickly in order to alleviate the power crisis now gripping the Island of Panay, which experienced last year more than 1,000 brownouts attributed to energy <http://www.asianewsnet.net/searchresult.php?sec=2&keysh=energy> supply shortfall.
Global Green signed a contract with Zurich-based Poyry Energy to pave the way for these projects’ implementation.
